Rick Karle here! Allright, I'm coming clean with my Heisman votes (and I'm darned proud of them). As one of over 900 Heisman voters nationwide, I take my job seriously- that's why I have chosen Alabama's Mark Ingram number one, followed by Colt McCoy and then Toby Gerhart. Homer pick you say? I beg to differ. I was all set to write in "McCoy" last Sunday when the night before, Ingram went off and McCoy went AWOL. Ingram vs Gerhart? Number 22 has a better yards per carry average than the Stanford star in fewer attempts. Tim Tebow? While he will go down as one of the top five college football players ever, his stats this season did not rival even the likes of Alabama's Greg McElroy. My gut feeling? It's a coin flip between Ingram and McCoy, with Gerhart closing fast!
Other mid-week thoughts: I see the NCAA is looking into yet another secondary rules violation by Lane Kiffin and the Tennessee Vols. It appears that Kiffin sent several recruiting hostesses to South Carolina to talk up big time recruit Marcus Latimore (wink wink). This just in: The other 11 SEC coaches wish they had thought of it... When I hear a pro boxer say he's retiring, it's kind of like Tiger Woods telling his wife he's running to the market for a quart of milk- both are hard to believe. But Jasper's Butterbean Esch is partaking in the last fight of his career Friday night at Boutwell Auditorium. From a man who used to build pre-fab homes to becoming one of the world's great celebrities, it's been quite a ride for the Bean... Any chance I can hire Jimmy Sexton as my agent? He put together quite a deal for Alabama football coach Nick Saban. By playing in the SEC Championship game and winning it, by being named SEC Coach Of The Year- by being named the Amos Alonzo Stagg Coach Of The Year- playing in the BCS Championship game, Saban has already pocketed over a half a million dollars in incentive money. If he beats Texas he grabs another $400,000. If he lands the Eddie Robinson Coach Of The Year Award (he's a finalist), I'm thinking Saban can take home over $1 million in incentives... I may take a few days off next week but I've asked the Salahi's to fill in for me... Was it proper for CBS TV to show Tim Tebow crying at last weekend's SEC Championship game, or is it simply part of the game? And what's your take on many Alabama fans at the Georgia Dome laughing when they saw it?... Charles Barkley tells me he's just signed a commercial deal with a major chain- I'll let him spill the beans... Taylor Hicks tells me he's already booked his hotel room in Pasadena... We'll be taking an entourage to Pasadena to cover the Crimson Tide (Paul Finebaum included)- look for our 60-minute special on January 6th, the day before the big game, live from So-Cal... Nice to see UAB quarterback Joe Webb named the Conference-USA Offensive Player Of The Year: 2300 passing yards, 1400 rushing yards, and responsible for 73 percent of his team's offense? Incredible... Sorry to hear former Auburn standout Ronnie Ross passed away. Ross was a standout receiver that hauled in passes from Pat Sullivan. He also turned linebacker in the 1970 Iron Bowl, intercepting the Tide's Scott Hunter in a 33-28 Auburn victory... Kudos to two of our state's great football stars. Last night, Ed Dyas and Woodrow Lowe were inducted into the National Football Foundation's "College Football Hall Of Fame". Dyas, now an orthopedic surgeon in Mobile, placed 4th in the 1960 Heisman voting. Lowe was a first-team All-American for the Tide for three straight years. Name the last time you've seen that happen... Wanna be my friend on Facebook? Check it out at Facebook/RickKarle... My son wants to play in two U-12 basketball leagues and play indoor soccer this winter. Too much? My real athlete may be my daughter, as she's burning it up in the Birmingham Swim League... Kind of a strange sight last weekend at the Georgia Dome as golfer Nick Faldo was walking around the press box. Word has it he dates a producer at CBS... Thanks for making "Sideline 2009 #1 (again). It's nice to know you recognize the hard work we put in here on Fox6, and I say "hats off" to the many high school football coaches, players, managers, cheerleaders, band members, and perhaps most importantly parents, who helped make it happen. And I like to think that we here at Fox6 know the importance of family. Five sports guys here at the station (all married), with a total of 11 kids- is there something in the water? No wonder w'ere tired all the time.
Speaking exhaustion, we could talk all night but it's getting late. See you on Fox6, on Facebook, Twitter and this very website. Rick Karle

Another Busy Weekend On Fox6!
Well, the Yankees just won yet another! Rick Karle here- just wanted to give you a "heads up" on some sports programming set for this weekend on Fox. Between college and high school football, our pre and post game football shows on Saturday, and yes- Charles Barkley live in my kitchen next Monday, watch out- we will bring you some exciting stuff!
"Sideline" comes your way Friday night at 10:10- we head straight into round one of the high school football playoffs with dozens of area teams profiled. Spain Park at County High is our Game Of The Week, the Leeds cheerleaders will be in studio, we profile the Homewood Marching Band, we look over Auburn commitment Jake Holland of Pelham, and hand out our Sideline Standout and Sideline Helmet MVP awards. See you Friday night!
Saturday morning Paul Finebaum joins me at Baumhower's Wings in Tuscaloosa for our "Tide and Tigers" pre-game show. The items on the show? Mike Dubberly wonders what really happens at the bottom of those piles after a play. We chat with Auburn coach Gene Chizik, Sheldon Haygood talks with Auburn DB Zac Etheridge as he recovers from a severe neck injury, and we show off the actual Heisman Trophy (will Mark Ingram soon take that baby home?). The show starts at 11 am on Fox6 and six other TV stations around our state- check out the show or stop by Wings and say "hello"- we may put you on TV!
Saturday night comes our "College Football Saturday" post-game show. Finebaum will be here to give us his take on the SEC, the BCS and the big national games. We come to you in HD from 10:30 to 11 pm- hope our hard work pays off in your viewership.
And Monday morning? The one and only Charles Barkley joins me at my place for "Karle's Koffeehouse." First it was Taylor Hicks, then Ruben Studdard, then Nick Saban, then Terry Saban, and now, Charles, as he joins me for breakfast between 8 and 9 am on "Good Day Aabama". Can our Steve Crocker take it to Charles on the basketball court? Has Barkley's golf swing improved? And what's the big guy eating for breakfast? See you Monday morning!
Have a great weekend - and remember, we are here for you: If you have a superb story to be told, we want to know about it. We like to think that no one in our state does sports features better than us, so keep us in mind if you want your story told. E-mail us won't you? Sports@GoWBRC.com See you on TV!

Just Wondering...
Rick Karle here... just wondering: Why do these MLB pitchers work so slowly?... What would happen if you scratched yourself as often as CC Sabathia?... How many phone calls would we get here at Fox6 if we didn't bring you the Vikings and the Packers this weekend?... Are the PapaJohns.com Bowl people sweating? The Gator Bowl's entry into the SEC fray means the Birmingham folks could be without an SEC team... Why is that when you change lines at the grocery store, the line you just left always moves faster?... Could the Phillies actually win the World Series?... Where has Mario Fannin been in this Auburn offense?... Could some Heisman voters actually cast a vote for Terrance Cody of Alabama?... Why does my local Post Office have a "30-Minute Parking" sign in front? You think these people are going to get me out of there in less than half an hour?... Should I start Brett Favre over Jay Cutler on my fantasy football team?.. Will anyone challenge Jimmie Johnson for the Cup?... Is Bart Starr one of the nicest men out there or what?... Is Charles Barkley serious about leaving TV and becoming an NBA GM? Walking out of a David Letterman taping two nights ago, Charles told me "yes"... I didn't go along with my family, but was last Friday's Miley Cyrus concert weak? My wife and kids say it was brutally bad. Hey Miley- there were 17 thousand 9-year olds in the audience- how about playing some familiar material?... Did Larry Langford put on a show in front of the cameras after being found guilty of bribery, conspiracy, money laundering and tax evasion?... Are these network talk shows featuring the likes of Glen Beck and Keith Olbermann getting a bit out of hand?... Do I look like a mummy with this High Def make-up on?... Will Anthony Grant have what it takes to turn around that Alabama basketball program?... Will Kenneth Cooper finally give UAB fans the big man they have needed since the departure of Alan Ogg nearly 20 years ago?... I'm wondering how Gene Bartow is doing in is fight against stomach cancer. I don't want to bother him with phone calls, but I'm concerned... Will I ever hop into a Sprint Cup car and drive 180 mph like I did last summer? Nope... What does Nick Saban do to relax?... Are college football fans starting to warm up to Gene Chizik? They should... Should I get off this blog so I can go do some TV work?
See you Friday night at 10:10 for "Sideline", and be sure to join Paul Finebaum and the entire Fox6 sports office Saturday night at 10:30 for "College Football Saturday". Be safe!

My Heisman Vote? Could Be #22!
Rick Karle here! I thought this long-time Red Sox fan would take a few minutes to bring you a few thoughts while A-Rod and the Yankees go deep again (jeez!)!
Item: Alabama tailback Mark Ingram the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy? Yes, Alabama owns 12 national championships, but landing a Heisman winner after 100 or so years of football would be a big deal. That's why the Alabama nation is going ga-ga over the prospects of tailback Mark Ingram winning the Heisman. One website (Heismanpundit.com) has taken an informal poll of Heisman voters, and Ingram leads Tim Tebow and Jimmy Clausen in the Heisman race. Now I have a Heisman vote, and if I had to vote right now, number 22 would be my pick. The catch? I still have some six weeks to get my vote in, so let's see what happens down the stretch. Besides Ingram, no one has really stepped up to catch my eye (although we all fondly remember last December when Tebow put his team on his back to beat the Tide). Mark Ingram certainly is the "Real Deal': Alabama folks hope that the "Real Deal" winds up in Manhattan come early December.
Item: South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is wondering if Nick Saban and friends are playing by the rules. After looking at the film from last weekend's Alabama-USC game, Spurrier says he noticed Alabama holder P.J. Fitzgerald placing a piece of white tape, or a white marker on the ground to mark PAT's and field goals. The SEC has received a formal complaint from USC, and Charles Bloom of the SEC says his folks are looking into it. NCAA rules prohibit any material or device to be used to spot or elevate a kick placement. Nick Saban will likely address this issue Wednesday evening, so be sure to check us out on Fox6 Wednesday at 9:45 and 10 pm.
Item: Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin says the BCS has it right: Alabama, he says, is a better team than Florida. At his Alabama game-week newser on Tuesday, Kiffin said that while the Gators are very fast, the Tide players are tougher. Kiffin says that Alabama can beat a team in all three phases. By the way- Tennessee has won only two of nine games against top-ranked teams. The Vols beat the Auburn Tigers back in 1985, and beat LSU back in 1959. My question? Will the real Jonathan Crompton please stand up? If Crompton plays like he did a week and a half ago, it could get interesting Saturday. And Alabama's denial of UT's request to wear orange jerseys this weekend at Bryant-Denny Stadium? I say Mal Moore should have let them wear whatever color they wanted- the message being the Vols would get their backsides kicks regardless of uniform.
And remember what Gene Stallings told me a year ago: If a football coach is concerned with what color jersey his players are wearing, he's in deep trouble.
Item: What's with Auburn quarterback Chris Todd (the same can be asked of Alabama QB Greg McElroy, but I digress). Over the last two games, Todd has completed less than 50 percent of his passes, and AU lost both games. Today, Auburn coach Gene Chizik reminded us that he's sticking with Todd, and his QB is in no way injured. Last year Todd suffered from the ole "TAS"-- "Tired Arm Syndrome"- today, Chizik reminded the media that many things can go wrong during a game that makes the quarterback look bad, and not all of those problems are the fault of the QB. Auburn OC Gus Malzahn says that he is confident that his offense will snap out of its funk, but remember: AU plays at LSU this weekend. (and by the way, LSU controls its own destiny and plans on winning out, all the way to a national title).
Item: "Tider & Tigers Today" heads to Baumhower's Wings in Tuscaloosa this weekend. Stop by and see Paul Finebaum and yours truly at 11 am this Saturday. We'll be broadcasting live from the restaurant, and we woud love to see you for an early lunch before you head over to the stadium. "Sideline" comes your way Friday night at 10:10, and this Thursday, it's time for SEC basketall media days in Birmingham.
Gotta go so some TV sports. The Yankees just won another (best team money can buy!). Tomorrow, it's a high def make-up session for me and the sports guys. I hope they bring the spackle. Have a good one!

It's A Jam-Packed Weekend Here On Fox6
Greetings from Rick Karle! Another few plugs for a busy sports weekend here on Fox6. We have a huge night of high school football on Friday, then we double up on our college football shows with Finebaum and the Fox6 sports guys!
Friday at 10:10 pm (or ten minutes after the Yankees-Angels game comes to an end), we head straight into "Sideline 2009". Our Game Of The Week will have #6 Vestavia Hills at @1 Hoover. The Bucs have not lost a region game at home in six years- can the Rebels spoil the party? A complete report from Regions Park, and other key games from locations such as Pinson, Erwin, Springville, Clay-Chalkville, Briarwood, Spain Park, Sumiton, County High, Hillcrest, Homewood, Gadsden City, Southside-Gadsden, Mortimer Jordan, Cullman, Tarrant, McAdory, Midfield, Thompson, Shelby County, Shades Valley, Lincoln, Moody, Cleveland and Oneonta- and those are just the home teams! We will welcome the Homewood cheerleaders into the studio, we will profile the Pelham Marching Band, we will put a microphone on Cullman coach Mark Britton, and we check out Moody's Chad Slade. The show starts right after baseball, and it's live streamed at MyFoxAl.com, for those of you outside the Fox6 viewing area.
Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, Paul Finebaum joins me for our "Tide and Tigers" preview show live from Wings in Tuscaloosa (the show will be seen live on seven TV stations in the states of Alabama and Georgia, so check your local listings). We hope you can come over to Baumhower's to say "hello" before the homecoming parade begins at 11:30 am. Among the items we will have for you? A chat with Auburn's Gene Chizik, and a profile of a 2-year old boy named "Saban"- (if I'm lyin' I'm dyin') - and don't worry, his sister is named "Tide".
Saturday night at 10:30, F inebaum and me will be back on set in the 'Ham re-capping a busy night of football. We will have live reports from Tuscaloosa and Auburn, we will check out the UAB-Ole Miss game, and Finebaum (a usual) will have plenty to say about the SEC games, the upcoming BCS poll, and the race to the national championship.
Have a great weekend- and I hope you and your family find time to join us here on Fox6!

#1 Florida & #2 Alabama: Statistics Don't Lie!
Rick Karle here! As we start another big week of anticipation and college football talk, we notice the top two teams in the AP Top-25 poll are from the SEC. Florida is #1, Alabama #2, with many so-called expert writers and broadcasters beginning to back the Crimson Tide. While the first BCS poll has yet to be released (I'm told it will show Florida-Alabama 1-2 followed by Virginia Tech), I can't help but wonder if we will not only see the Gators face the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game, but the BCS Championship game on Fox as well.
If both teams run the table up to the showdown in Atlanta, I'm thinking the loser of that SEC Championship game is not necessarily out of the national championship picture. I say why not "play it again?" Oh, there's lots of football yet to be played, in fact Alabama has Tennessee, LSU and Auburn remaining- but the Tide would be favored in each game. If Saban's crew takes care of business, alot of us could be heading to Pasadena over the holidays.
Now I'm never one to put the cart before the horse (or is it the other way arond?) But as SEC teams chase the Gators and the Crimson Tide, a quick look at current SEC statitics shows you how dominating these teams have been in the most powerful conference in the land.
Offense? Both teams have it, as the Gators are ranked #1 in the SEC, scoring at a clip of 39 points per game. #2 in the SEC? Alabama at 37 ppg. Total team offense? UF is #1, UA is #2. And defense? Now we're talking, as both teams feature dominating "D". Florida currently ranks #1 in the SEC in defense, allowing a mere 6.4 points per game. #2 is Alabama, allowing only 12.5 ppg. Interceptions? Alabama ranks 2nd. Sacks? Alabama ranks 1st, Kickoff returns? Florida is #1. Punt returns? Alabama is #1. I hope by now you get my drift. The LSU's, Auburn's, Georgia's and Tennessee's can chase the big two, but the Gators and the Tide seem to be putting more distances between the ten other SEC teams (no to mention the other nationally ranked teams) than I had thought.
See you in Pasadena? Don't make reservations yet- but you may want to get on the web and check out hotel prices. While an SEC team such as Georgia or Auburn can step up and bite the Gators and the Tide, statistics seldom lie, especially in big games. The bottom line? By the time this all washes out, I have a feeling we could be watching a pair of Florida-Alabama games!
See you on Fox this week- Feel free to email me at RKarle@GoWBRC if you have any questions or concerns!
